FOOM

Another term for ‘Hard Takeoff’, where an Artificial General Intelligence (AGI) turns into an Artificial Super Intelligence (ASI) is a very short amount of time through recursive self-improvement.

More than 50% of AI Scientists and Professionals believe that ASI (FOOM) has a 10% chance, or greater, of leading to the extinction of Homo sapiens.

A FOOM is in contrast to a ‘Soft Takeoff’ where an AGI would take many years, or decades, to become an ASI.

A sudden increase in artificial intelligence such that an AI system becomes extremely powerful.

A “foom” originates from the meaning of the sound of a “muffled explosion”, in this case, an intelligence explosion, first coined by I.J. Good (1965).

  • Let an ultraintelligent machine be defined as a machine that can far surpass all the intellectual activities of any man however clever. Since the design of machines is one of these intellectual activities, an ultraintelligent machine could design even better machines; there would then unquestionably be an ‘intelligence explosion’, and the intelligence of man would be left far behind. Thus the first ultraintelligent machine is the last invention that man need ever make, provided that the machine is docile enough to tell us how to keep it under control.
