The Industry Reacts to Grok-3 – SPEED is all you need | Matthew Berman

grock 3 was just released and the industry has been reacting strongly it is definitely the number one model in terms of the LM Arena leaderboards and that is based on human ratings and so I want to show you all the reactions from the AI industry right now but first let’s talk about grock’s Mission which I actually really like now we know Elon Musk was greatly inspired by The Hitchhikers Guide to the universe and this is supposed to be that supercomputer so xai’s mission is to understand the universe where the aliens what’s the meaning of life how does the universe end and they are going to rigorously pursue the truth maximally truthful so I like all of that whether that actually happens in practice we’ll see but good mission to have all right so first I want to show you an example of grock creating a game and it’s very very impressive so this was shared by our friend of the channel chubby by the way if you’re not subscribed to the newsletter chubby writes incredible deep Dives unique pieces definitely go check them out forward future . a and so check this out grock 3 recreated the game portal now obviously this is very simplistic Graphics but essentially on one go this is really good so you shoot your portal gun on one side you get one color you shoot your portal gun on another wall and you get another color and then you walk through one exit out the other and it keeps track of all of that so very very impressive next one of the most impressive things that the grock team did was actually get their Colossus supercomputer up and running in such a short period period of time 122 days with 100 h100 Nvidia gpus 10 times more power than grock 2 look at this data center now a few things to note here number one they had to find a building to use that was already existing they couldn’t build a new building then they actually had to acquire and install and interconnect all of these h100s in one way this is the biggest concentrated data center of gpus in the world it is water cooled which is very unique cuz most systems of this size are air cooled it also has external generators as power because they had to spin it up quickly so they just bought a bunch of generators and then on one side of the building they have a bunch of generators on the other side they have a bunch of water cooling systems so overall just very impressive how quickly they were able to get everything together Andre karpathy got Early Access to grock 3 and here’s what he had to say so thinking first grock 3 clearly has an around state-of-the-art thinking model great and did great out of the box on my settlers Katan question I’m going to skip over that few models get this right reliably the top open AI thinking models get it too but all of deepsee Gemini 2.0 flash linking and Claud could not it did not solve his Emoji mystery question it solved a few Tik toac toe boards I gave it with a pretty clean nice Chain of Thought So I upped the difficulty and ased to generate three tricky Tic Tac Toe boards which it failed I uploaded the gpt2 paper as a bunch of simple lookup questions and it worked great I then asked to estimate the number of training flops it took to train GPT 2 with no searching this is tricky because the number of tokens is not spelled out so it had to be partially estimated and partially calculated stressing all of lookup knowledge and math and it got that right and it will attempt to solve the Ryman hypothesis but other models 01 Pro claw Gemini 2.0 flinking don’t even try they just give up deep search very neat offering that seems to combine something along the lines of what open AI perplexity called Deep research together with thinking except instead of deep research it is deep search Okay slightly different name but basically the same thing so he gave it a bunch of topics to do deep research on what’s up with the upcoming Apple launch any rumors yes why is paler stock surging recently yes White Lotus 3 where was it filmed and is it the same team as seasons 1 and two what toothpaste does Brian Johnson use and then the ones that it failed singles Inferno season 4 cast where are they now what speech detex program has Simon Willison mentioned that he’s using so not so good on those two and he goes on to talk about some gotas that he gave it got some right some wrong and here’s his summary as far as a quick Vibe check over two hours this morning grock 3 plus thinking feels somewhere around the state-of-the-art territory of open AI strongest model 01 Pro which is $200 a month but I believe Gro is only $40 a month slightly better than deep SE gar1 and Gemini 2.0 flash thinking which is quite incredible considering that the team started from scratch a year ago that is the most incredible thing the speed in Access way early so I got to use grock 3 extensively early my mind is blown very impressive model congrats to Elon and the team for bringing it to life and Elon then goes on to say did you try voice mode Now voice Mode’s not available yet they they said it’s going to be available soon maybe in the next coming weeks I cannot wait to try that out that’s going to be super interesting hopefully they make voice mode a Little Bit Sassy cuz I think that’s what I’m really looking for from the grock model now obviously Lex and Elon are friends and Lex has nothing but good things to say about Elon so of course he got Early Access we have Theo that’s t3.8 coding so we have three versions We have grock 3 on the left 03 mini in the middle and Claude 3.5 on it on the right and what we’re looking for is a little bit of a physics simulation now which one do you think is best definitely not grock 3 cuz there’s no ball in the middle but between 03 mini and CLA 3.5 Sonet they’re both pretty darn good I would say maybe CLA 3.5 Sonet takes the win here now 03 mini shape is spinning more quickly so I think that’s why it’s bouncing around more aggressively overall pretty good and here he says I decided to give it one more go and it fell right out so not that good Robert scoble has something to say so grock 3 benchmarks he shared but here’s the key the thing to really pay attention to an AI is learning speed and xai is learning way faster than any other that is true they are accelerating the fastest who said that Apple Siri co-founder Tom Gruber he told me at a dinner a decade ago that that is the most important thing to pay attention to next the CEO of repet grock 3 appears to be state-of-the-art for frer model this is a huge accomplishment especially considering how late in the game they are that is the running theme everybody is like wow they caught up in basically just about a year they got this insane data center set up they got a ton of data cleaned up ready to train a model on they trained the model they released it they have all these features yeah that is super impressive Alexander Wang CEO of scale AI also said very good model looking forward to more Partnerships on grock 4 and Beyond Beth Jos says grock 3 is on top congrats incredible what a dedicated team can do in such a short period of time and finally box CEO Aaron Levy says grock 3 seems
