Homo sapiens (humans) dominance on Earth stems from our unique general intelligence and ability to cooperate in large groups, an evolutionary leap that allowed us to reshape the planet as the apex species on earth. We are now on the verge of creating our potential successor: Artificial Intelligence. AI began as simple, narrow tools, but the recent advent of self-learning machines has triggered exponential progress. Systems like ChatGPT, trained on vast datasets, are already demonstrating broad capabilities that are transforming society, from the economy to creative industries. The next anticipated step is Artificial General Intelligence (AGI), an AI with the cognitive flexibility to match or exceed humans across virtually all tasks. The creation of AGI would be a monumental event, as it would not be bound by human biological limitations, capable of thinking faster and being copied endlessly. Beyond AGI lies the “intelligence explosion,” where a self-improving AI would rapidly evolve into an Artificial superintelligence, an entity with an intellect far beyond our comprehension. This presents humanity with its ultimate challenge. Such a being could solve our most complex problems—curing disease, ending poverty, and fixing the climate—or it could become an uncontrollable force, posing an existential risk. As the world’s largest companies race to build it, we are running toward an unknown future defined by our final invention.
